Haryana cabinet clears Rs 10,266-cr revised Gurugram Metro project, World bank loan boost

Gurugram: In a major push to strengthen urban mobility in Gurugram, the Haryana Cabinet, chaired by Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, has approved the revised cost of the much-awaited Gurugram Metro Rail project, supplementary reports linked to Rapid Metro and Gurugram Railway Station connectivity, and a proposal to finance the entire soft loan component through the World Bank.

The Cabinet approved a sharp revision in the total project cost from ₹5,452.72 crore to ₹10,266.54 crore for the 28.50-km metro corridor connecting Millennium City Centre to Cyber City. The corridor, comprising 27 stations, was originally approved by the Haryana Cabinet in August 2020 and later cleared by the Government of India.

Officials said the cost escalation is largely due to inflation between 2019 and 2023, changes in GST rates, independent operational requirements for the Millennium City Centre–Cyber City corridor, the need for a full-fledged depot and additional rolling stock, modifications in the RRTS alignment, and the addition of a metro spur linking Gurugram Railway Station.

Under the revised cost structure, ₹7,098.70 crore has been earmarked for updated project costs due to inflation and GST revisions, ₹947.06 crore for independent corridor requirements, and ₹454.32 crore for the proposed metro spur from Sector-5 to Gurugram Railway Station.

The Cabinet also approved supplementary reports for integrating the project with Rapid Metro and creating a dedicated depot in Sector-33 across 22.86 hectares of government land. Additionally, a 1.80-km metro spur from Sector-5 to Gurugram Railway Station has been cleared to enhance multi-modal connectivity and improve seamless travel between rail and metro networks.

In another key decision, Haryana approved financing the entire soft loan component through the World Bank after delays in confirmation from the European Investment Bank (EIB). The move is aimed at preventing delays in project execution and ensuring faster implementation of Gurugram’s long-awaited metro expansion.
