Gurugram metro expansion gains momentum as first 160-Tonne U-Girder installed near Cyber Park

Gurugram: The Gurugram Metro Expansion Project achieved a major construction milestone with the successful lifting and installation of its first 160-tonne U-girder near Cyber Park. The massive precast structure was positioned between Pier Nos.
26 and 27 using 400-tonne and 600-tonne hydraulic cranes, marking the beginning of a new phase of on-ground construction.

Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh formally inaugurated the operation after performing a ceremonial puja. The U-girder was subsequently installed at the designated location in the presence of project officials while adhering to prescribed engineering standards and safety protocols.

Speaking on the occasion, Rao Narbir Singh said the installation of the first U-girder represents a significant step forward in the execution of the Gurugram Metro Expansion Project, which remains one of the Haryana Government’s key infrastructure priorities.

He said the government is committed to providing modern and efficient public transport facilities to support Gurugram’s rapid urban growth while ensuring strict compliance with quality and safety standards during construction.

“The lifting of the first U-girder is not merely the start of another construction activity but a crucial step towards strengthening Gurugram’s future connectivity. As the project progresses, residents will begin to see its benefits on the ground,” the minister said.

The successful installation is expected to accelerate construction activities along the corridor, with additional structural works scheduled to proceed in accordance with the project timeline.

The metro expansion is widely regarded as a critical initiative to address increasing traffic congestion and mobility challenges in Gurugram. Once completed, the expanded metro network is expected to improve connectivity between key urban centres, provide a faster and more reliable mode of transport, and reduce dependence on road-based travel.

Technical Details of the U-Girder

The U-girders for the project are being manufactured at a dedicated precast casting yard in Naharpur Rupa, Sector 33, Gurugram. Each girder measures approximately 28 metres in length and 5.05 metres in width, incorporating nearly 16 tonnes of reinforcement steel and around 60 cubic metres of M-60 grade concrete.

These pre-tensioned U-girders will form the upper structure of the metro viaduct, on which the tracks will be laid for train operations.

The transportation and installation of the 160-tonne structure required meticulous planning, including route management, traffic regulation and safety arrangements. The girders are transported from the casting yard to the project site using a 40-metre-long multi-axle trailer and puller assembly, designed specifically for handling such oversized loads.
