GMDA gears up for monsoon: 24×7 flood control office, Mock drills at key underpasses from May 15

Gurugram: In a major step towards monsoon preparedness, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has announced the establishment of a round-the-clock Flood Control Office to tackle waterlogging and ensure quick emergency response during the upcoming rainy season in Gurugram.

The dedicated Flood Control Office will function 24×7 throughout the monsoon period, serving as a centralized command center for monitoring rainfall-related situations, coordinating emergency responses, deploying resources and resolving public grievances related to flooding and traffic disruptions.

According to GMDA officials, extensive preparations are already underway to minimize inconvenience to commuters and residents during heavy rainfall. Dedicated teams will be deployed for the regular cleaning and maintenance of drain inlets, road gullies and drainage networks to ensure smooth discharge of stormwater from Gurugram’s master roads. Authorities have stressed that special emphasis is being placed on keeping drainage infrastructure free from silt, debris and blockages to prevent waterlogging.

To strengthen emergency response, GMDA will also keep pumping machinery, mobile tractor-mounted pump sets, suction tankers and DG sets on standby for deployment in flood-prone areas depending on rainfall intensity and ground conditions. Additionally, JCB machines and labour teams will be mobilized for emergency desilting operations and cleaning of drainage systems wherever required.

In continuation of its monsoon preparedness plan, GMDA will also begin mock drills at major underpasses across Gurugram from May 15 onwards to assess the operational efficiency of drainage systems, pumping machinery and flood-response infrastructure.

The mock drill schedule includes key underpasses at Ambience Mall, Subhash Chowk, Shankar Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Signature Tower, Vatika Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, Hero Honda Chowk, Medanta Road, HUDA City Centre and Cyber City, among others. During these drills, authorities will test pumping systems, DG sets, sump cleaning mechanisms and drainage operations to ensure quick rainwater discharge during heavy downpours.

GMDA officials said all concerned departments are being mobilized in advance to ensure efficient flood management and improve the city’s readiness for the upcoming monsoon season.
