Gurugram cuts monsoon waterlogging hotspots from 90 to 7, says GMDA

Gurugram: A series of major drainage and flood mitigation projects undertaken by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has significantly improved the city’s preparedness for the monsoon, reducing the number of waterlogging-prone locations from around 90 in 2019 to just seven at present, officials said on Friday.

According to GMDA Chief Executive Officer P. C. Meena, sustained investments in stormwater infrastructure, restoration of drainage networks and continuous field preparedness have delivered visible results during the ongoing monsoon season.

“The number of waterlogging hotspots in Gurugram has reduced from nearly 90 locations in 2019 to only seven locations now. We are actively working to address these remaining sites as well. The encouraging results witnessed during recent rainfall events reaffirm that long-term investments in drainage infrastructure are yielding tangible improvements across the city,” Meena said.

The remaining vulnerable locations include Narsinghpur, Khandsa Chowk, Jwala Mill Road, Sector 28 near Chakkarpur, Laxman Vihar, Sheetla Mata Road and Krishna Chowk.

GMDA officials said that more than 13 kilometres of new stormwater drainage infrastructure has been developed in recent years. Key projects include the Master Carrier Drain Leg-IV along the Southern Peripheral Road from Vatika Chowk to NH-48, a 700-metre stormwater drain at Narsinghpur linked to the Leg-III Badshahpur Drain, and a new drainage system near Tau Devi Lal Stadium. All three projects became operational before the current monsoon season and have helped reduce waterlogging along SPR, Medanta Road, Rajiv Chowk and Narsinghpur.

In addition, GMDA has undertaken extensive restoration of the city’s drainage network. More than 70 kilometres of master drains and over 60 kilometres of surface drains have been desilted and cleaned, while over 1,500 new road gully inlet points have been created to improve stormwater collection.

The authority is also adopting nature-based solutions in collaboration with Indian Institute of Technology Delhi. Green water-harvesting structures are being developed in Sectors 31 and 39 and near AIT Chowk to enhance groundwater recharge and reduce surface runoff.

“With scientific planning, timely infrastructure development and continuous monitoring, Gurugram is becoming increasingly resilient to heavy rainfall and urban flooding,” Meena added.
