Gurugram: In a significant push to tackle one of the city’s most persistent monsoon challenges, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has intensified flood mitigation measures on Sheetla Mata Road by restoring key drains, removing blockages and strengthening the stormwater drainage network.
The move comes amid the ongoing monsoon season, when Sheetla Mata Road frequently witnesses severe waterlogging, disrupting traffic and causing inconvenience to thousands of commuters and devotees visiting the Sheetla Mata Mandir.
GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena said that a 900-metre-long surface drain running from Sheetla Mata Mandir towards Bhagat Singh Chowk has been completely desilted and restored. The drain, which was heavily clogged with silt, debris and other obstructions, has now been connected to the master stormwater drain, enabling faster discharge of rainwater.
“The objective is to improve stormwater evacuation and provide long-term relief from waterlogging in this critical corridor,” Meena said.
The authority has also revived the master stormwater drain located on the left side of the road leading towards the temple. The drain had become non-functional due to heavy silt accumulation and blockages. After extensive cleaning and restoration, it is now operational again.
To further enhance drainage efficiency, GMDA is constructing new road gullies at strategic locations. These additional inlet points will allow rainwater from the road surface to directly enter the drainage network, reducing water accumulation during heavy rainfall.
In another major intervention, GMDA has started drainage strengthening work along the nearly 800-metre stretch between Atul Kataria Chowk and Sheetla Mata Mandir. Officials found that several unauthorised sewer connections from nearby residential areas, including Rajeev Nagar, were discharging sewage into the stormwater drain, significantly reducing its carrying capacity.
Teams are now disconnecting illegal sewer lines, carrying out desilting operations and restoring the drainage channel to ensure smooth flow of stormwater.
As an immediate monsoon response, two tractor-mounted pump sets have also been deployed to quickly remove accumulated rainwater and prevent prolonged flooding.
Officials said the ongoing works are expected to substantially improve the drainage capacity of Sheetla Mata Road and provide a lasting solution to the recurring waterlogging problem that has troubled residents and commuters for years.
