Gurugram to fast-track Rs 3,000-crore infrastructure push; Rao Narbir Singh reviews GMDA projects

Gurugram : In a major push to accelerate Gurugram’s urban development, Haryana Industries and Commerce Minister Rao Narbir Singh on Thursday conducted a comprehensive review of ongoing and proposed infrastructure projects undertaken by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).

Chairing a high-level meeting at the GMDA headquarters, the minister reviewed the progress of critical projects including elevated corridors, flyovers, road infrastructure, storm-water drainage systems and long-term drinking water supply plans. Senior officials, including GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena, participated in the review meeting.

The minister directed officials to ensure timely execution of projects aimed at transforming Gurugram into a congestion-free city with improved civic infrastructure.

Rs 3,000 Crore Worth of Projects Under Various Stages

Officials informed the minister that infrastructure projects worth over ₹3,000 crore are currently under execution, tendering or planning stages. Development works worth approximately ₹1,144 crore are being implemented on the ground, while projects worth ₹1,453 crore are under tendering. Another ₹1,883 crore worth of projects are at various stages of planning and approval.

Major Traffic Relief Measures Planned

A key focus of the meeting was the city’s traffic management strategy. Officials briefed the minister on five major elevated road projects, including proposed corridors between Rajiv Chowk and Atul Kataria Chowk, Mahavir Chowk and IFFCO Chowk, and Atul Kataria Chowk to the Dwarka Expressway.

The ambitious Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) Elevated Corridor also featured prominently during the review. The first package, stretching from NH-48 to Vatika Chowk, is currently in the tendering stage, while consultant appointment is underway for the second package extending to Faridabad Road.

To further ease traffic congestion, plans are being advanced for eight new flyovers and underpasses across the GMDA area. Proposed locations include Baba Kamla Chowk, Dadi Sati Chowk, Garhi Chowk, Bakhtawar Chowk and Ambedkar Chowk, along with underpasses at Badshahpur Chowk and Millennium City Centre.
A combined flyover and underpass has also been proposed at RD City Chowk.

Drinking Water Capacity to Expand by 2031

The review highlighted growing water demand in Gurugram. Officials stated that the city’s current drinking water requirement stands at around 770 MLD, while GMDA’s treatment plants have a combined capacity of 670 MLD. The remaining demand is being met through municipal and private tube wells.

With demand projected to rise to 1,170 MLD by 2031, GMDA plans to significantly enhance treatment and supply capacity between 2026 and 2029. The authority currently operates a 300-km master water supply network and aims to achieve complete water supply coverage in sectors 58-80 by June 30, 2026.

Monsoon Preparedness and Drainage Works

Ahead of the monsoon season, Rao Narbir Singh directed officials to complete all storm-water drainage projects within stipulated timelines to prevent urban flooding.

Officials informed the meeting that construction of Leg-4 of the Master Storm Water Drain is expected to be completed within the next 10 days. Once operational, excess water from the Vatika Chowk area will be diverted, reducing pressure on Leg-3 and helping mitigate waterlogging in several parts of the city.

Desilting work on Leg-II and Leg-III has already been completed, while pumps have been deployed at vulnerable locations to ensure rapid drainage during heavy rainfall.

Focus on Timely Completion

The minister stressed that quality and timely completion of projects must remain top priorities. He instructed departments to accelerate execution of road, drainage and water infrastructure projects, particularly in rapidly developing areas of New Gurugram.

“Providing better civic amenities and strengthening urban infrastructure is the government’s priority,” Rao Narbir Singh said, while directing officials to ensure effective coordination and timely delivery of all major projects.
