Gurugram ramps up monsoon readiness: GMDA pushes fast-track drainage works to prevent waterlogging

Gurugram: Gurugram is gearing up for the monsoon with an aggressive push to strengthen its drainage infrastructure, as GMDA CEO P.C. Meena conducted extensive on-ground inspections across key locations in the city.

The focus remains on ensuring a waterlogging-free season through timely completion of critical projects and improved stormwater management.

At Tau Devi Lal Stadium and Rajiv Chowk, Meena reviewed the progress of a major stormwater drain project aimed at channelising rainwater along Medanta Road and nearby areas. He stressed the need to accelerate construction and directed officials to install additional road gullies along master roads to enable faster water discharge during heavy rainfall.

A key review was also conducted on the 6.5 km RCC box drain along the Central Peripheral Road (CPR), connecting from the NPR/SPR cloverleaf junction to Sector 37D. This drain will eventually link to Vatika Chowk and is expected to significantly reduce waterlogging along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and Dwarka Expressway by directing water towards the Najafgarh drain. Officials were instructed to complete desilting work well before the rains.

In Sector 37D, Meena assessed the integration of major stormwater drains (Leg-3 and Leg-4) with the Manesar drain to ensure smooth water flow. He also flagged illegal sewage discharge near Dhankot and ordered immediate diversion, allowing only treated water to flow through designated channels. Installation of aerators at Sewage Treatment Plants was also emphasised to improve water quality.

At Narsinghpur, ongoing drain construction to connect service lanes to the Badshahpur drain was reviewed, with discussions held with NHAI for a culvert on NH-48 to enhance drainage efficiency.

Earlier, a high-level review meeting was held to monitor progress on drainage projects, desilting operations, and waterlogging-prone areas. Meena stressed strict timelines, better coordination, and deployment of resources to ensure Gurugram is fully prepared for the monsoon, minimising disruption for residents and commuters.
