Gurugram : Construction of the much-awaited Gurugram Metro Expansion Project is progressing at a steady pace, with approximately 11 per cent physical progress achieved by the end of June, according to the Haryana Mass Rapid Transport Corporation (HMRTC).
The ambitious project involves the development of a 28.5-kilometre metro corridor connecting Millennium City Centre, Cyber City and Dwarka Expressway, aimed at significantly enhancing urban mobility in Gurugram. The project received approval from the Government of India and construction activities are currently underway across multiple stretches of the proposed route.
An HMRTC spokesperson said the metro extension is expected to transform public transportation in one of the country’s fastest-growing urban centres. Once operational, the corridor will provide seamless connectivity between key commercial, residential and business districts, making daily commuting more efficient for thousands of residents and office-goers.
“The project will establish direct metro connectivity between Millennium City Centre, Cyber City and Dwarka Expressway, offering commuters a reliable and convenient public transport option,” the spokesperson said.
The metro expansion is also expected to contribute to reducing the city’s dependence on private vehicles, a major factor behind Gurugram’s chronic traffic congestion. Authorities believe that improved public transport infrastructure will help ease pressure on major arterial roads, leading to smoother traffic movement and shorter travel times.
In addition to addressing mobility challenges, the project is expected to deliver environmental benefits. Officials said greater use of public transport would help curb vehicular emissions, supporting efforts to reduce air pollution and promote sustainable urban development. The metro corridor is being positioned as a key component of Gurugram’s long-term strategy to build an environmentally friendly and efficient transportation network.
The spokesperson further noted that the project has been designed to meet the city’s rapidly growing transportation demands while strengthening connectivity between emerging urban hubs along the Dwarka Expressway and established commercial centres in Gurugram.
Urban planners and transport experts have long highlighted the need for expanded mass transit infrastructure in Gurugram due to its rising population and increasing economic activity.
