GMDA plugs missing drainage links to strengthen Gurugram’s flood defence

Gurugram: Intensifying its efforts to tackle urban flooding during the monsoon season, the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) has identified and begun rectifying another critical missing link in the city’s drainage network near Lotus Valley School in Sector 50. The move comes shortly after similar connectivity gaps were addressed in the Mayfield Garden area.

The initiative is aimed at ensuring seamless connectivity between surface drains and the master stormwater drainage system, enabling faster evacuation of rainwater and reducing the risk of waterlogging in vulnerable locations.

GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena said that approximately 40 metres of drainage infrastructure is currently being laid from Lotus Valley School towards the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) to complete a missing section of the surface drain. The drain will ultimately connect to the master stormwater drain running along Gurugram University, creating an uninterrupted channel for stormwater discharge.

In addition, GMDA is also completing two other missing stretches of surface drains, measuring around 20 metres in total, between Lotus Valley School and Gurugram University. Alongside these works, the authority has undertaken extensive desilting of drains, construction of new road gullies and cleaning of the existing drainage network on the stretch.

According to officials, these measures will significantly improve the carrying capacity of the drainage system and ensure unobstructed flow of stormwater during heavy rainfall. The works are expected to bridge remaining gaps in the network and facilitate smooth movement of rainwater from local drains into the city’s primary stormwater channels.

Highlighting the importance of drainage connectivity, Meena said strengthening the stormwater network remains a key component of GMDA’s monsoon preparedness strategy. He noted that vulnerable locations across the city are being surveyed to identify missing links, which are being taken up on priority to prevent disruptions in rainwater flow.

The CEO further directed the engineering wing to ensure end-to-end connectivity of the city’s drainage infrastructure by eliminating all missing links and reinforcing connections with master drains. He emphasized that a fully integrated drainage network is essential for efficient stormwater evacuation, quicker recession of rainwater and keeping roads free from prolonged waterlogging during the monsoon season.
