No more single-use plastic! Gurugram to take Tough action against pollution

Gurugram: The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has decided to intensify its crackdown on single-use plastic, open waste burning, and pollution-related violations following an important meeting of the City Level Task Force chaired by Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya.

During the meeting, several key decisions were taken to strengthen monitoring mechanisms, enforcement action, and the overall plastic and solid waste management framework in the district. The focus is on identifying major pollution-prone locations across the city and ensuring strict and continuous vigilance in those areas.

As part of the action plan, special inspection drives will be conducted at banquet halls to check the use of banned plastic items. Identified pollution hotspots will be monitored on a daily basis, while locations where open burning of waste takes place will be mapped and subjected to strict enforcement action. The administration aims to curb practices that significantly contribute to air and environmental pollution.

To improve plastic waste management in rural areas, the task force discussed the possibility of setting up Material Recovery Facilities (MRF centres) and installing shredder machines at the block level. The responsibility for exploring and implementing these measures has been assigned to the District Development and Panchayat Officer (DDPO), Gurugram.

The Gurugram Police have also been directed to enhance surveillance and take strict action to prevent the illegal transportation of single-use plastic within the district. Coordination among enforcement agencies will be strengthened to ensure effective implementation.

The meeting further emphasized the need to compile comprehensive data on plastic recycling units operating in the district, industrial composting units handling compostable plastic, and waste-to-oil units. Close coordination with regional officers of the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) was also highlighted to ensure regulatory compliance.

Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya stated that the campaign against single-use plastic in Gurugram will be enforced more rigorously in the coming days. Along with enforcement actions, he directed officials to launch extensive public awareness campaigns to encourage citizen participation. Regular challans will be issued against violators involved in open waste burning, use of banned plastic, and littering in public spaces, he added.
