Cleanliness drive in Gurugram: 317 challans issued, Rs 4 lakh plus fine collected in just 8 days

Gurugram : In a strong push to enforce cleanliness, environmental protection, and civic discipline, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has intensified its special enforcement drive, issuing 317 challans and collecting over Rs 4 lakh in fines within just eight days, from January 20 to January 28.

According to Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, the campaign aims to curb activities that harm public health and the environment, including open garbage dumping, garbage burning, use of banned polythene, illegal construction practices, and violations of construction and demolition (C&D) waste norms. The drive covered multiple areas across the city with strict on-ground inspections.

The highest number of challans were issued for use of banned polythene, with 203 violators fined Rs 1.21 lakh for flouting plastic prohibition rules. Additionally, 52 violators were penalized for not keeping dustbins on their premises and spreading waste in open areas, resulting in fines totaling Rs 26,000.

The corporation also took stern action against garbage burning, penalising 12 offenders with Rs 60,000, while 25 violators involved in illegal C&D waste dumping were fined Rs 59,500. For continuing construction activities despite restrictions, 7 offenders were fined Rs 1.10 lakh. Other penalties included fines for water wastage (Rs 14,000), open garbage throwing (Rs 5,000), transporting construction material without covering (Rs 5,000), and other environmental violations.

Commissioner Dahiya stated that open waste burning and illegal dumping significantly increase pollution levels and pose serious health risks to residents. He emphasized that MCG has further tightened monitoring of construction sites, especially regarding dust control and safety compliance.

Appealing to citizens, the commissioner urged residents to avoid plastic use, prevent water wastage, ensure proper waste disposal, and cooperate with civic authorities to make Gurugram cleaner and more environmentally sustainable.
