Gurugram begins work on long-term Solution to waterlogging; IIT Gandhinagar experts join MCG and GMDA

Gurugram : In a significant move towards finding a permanent solution to Gurugram’s recurring waterlogging problem, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) and Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) have accelerated efforts with the support of experts from IIT Gandhinagar.

A team comprising IIT Gandhinagar professors Vivek Kapadia and Udit Bhatia on Wednesday visited some of the city’s most flood-prone locations, including Subhash Chowk and Rajiv Chowk, along with MCG and GMDA officials. The inspection was aimed at assessing water accumulation patterns and identifying sustainable rainwater management solutions.

MCG Additional Commissioner Yash Jaluka, Councillor Kuldeep Yadav, and GMDA Executive Engineer Amit Godara accompanied the IIT team and briefed them on the existing drainage challenges and proposed interventions.

High-Capacity Storage Tanks and Injection Wells Planned

As part of the proposed strategy, authorities are planning to construct high-capacity underground storage tanks and injection wells near waterlogging hotspots. During heavy rainfall, stormwater will first be collected in storage tanks and subsequently channelled underground through injection wells, reducing surface flooding and improving groundwater recharge.

Officials said the initiative is designed not only to prevent water accumulation on roads but also to make productive use of rainwater by replenishing underground aquifers.
Injection Wells to Handle Up to 80 Litres Per Second

According to the proposed plan, injection wells with capacities ranging from 48 litres per second to 80 litres per second will be installed at identified locations. These wells are expected to rapidly absorb and transfer large volumes of rainwater underground, helping clear flooded areas in a shorter period.

The size of storage tanks and the capacity of the wells will be determined based on the extent of waterlogging and runoff generated in different areas of the city.

IIT Experts to Develop Location-Specific Water Management Model

The collaboration with IIT Gandhinagar aims to develop a technically robust and long-term water management framework tailored to Gurugram’s local geography and urban infrastructure. Experts are currently evaluating site-specific requirements to optimize storage capacity and groundwater recharge mechanisms.

Smart Monitoring Through SCADA Technology

The proposed system will also incorporate SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) technology and will be linked with the Central Ground Water Board for real-time monitoring and analysis. The integration is expected to provide better oversight of groundwater levels, rainfall management, and system performance.

Focus Shifts from Temporary Relief to Permanent Solution

Officials emphasized that the objective is not merely to pump out water during rain events but to create a sustainable infrastructure model that addresses the root causes of urban flooding. The planned network of underground storage tanks and high-capacity injection wells is being positioned as a key component of Gurugram’s long-term strategy to tackle waterlogging while enhancing groundwater conservation.

The initiative comes amid growing public concern over recurring flooding in several parts of Gurugram during the monsoon season, which has repeatedly disrupted traffic and daily life across the city.
