Gurugram: Gurugram’s urban footprint has expanded dramatically over the past decade, with the city’s built-up area increasing by nearly 64 per cent from 102.5 square kilometres in 2015 to 168.2 square kilometres in 2025, according to a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based study conducted by the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
The study, which analysed urban growth patterns using high-resolution satellite imagery, GIS tools, statistical techniques and machine-learning models, projects continued expansion along the city’s major development corridors through 2030. The findings are expected to play a crucial role in planning future infrastructure projects and managing the challenges associated with rapid urbanisation.
GMDA Chief Executive Officer P.C. Meena said the study reinforces the need for data-driven planning in one of India’s fastest-growing urban centres.
“The GIS study provides valuable spatial insights into Gurugram’s growth pattern and helps us anticipate future infrastructure requirements. Such scientific assessments enable informed planning decisions and ensure that infrastructure development keeps pace with urban expansion,” Meena said.
According to the study, Gurugram’s growth has been concentrated along key transport and development corridors, including Dwarka Expressway, Southern Peripheral Road (SPR), NH-48, Golf Course Extension Road, Sohna Road, New Gurugram, Cyber City-Udyog Vihar and IMT Manesar. Improved connectivity, rising economic activity and planned urban development have emerged as the primary drivers behind this expansion.
The GIS assessment was undertaken to provide a scientific basis for planning critical urban infrastructure, including roads, stormwater drainage systems, water supply networks, sewerage facilities, public transport and intelligent traffic management systems.
Dr Sultan Singh, Senior Scientist and Head of GMDA’s GIS Section, said the study achieved an overall mapping accuracy of more than 92 per cent, making it a reliable tool for assessing land-use changes across the city.
“The assessment combines advanced geospatial technology and machine-learning techniques to map urban growth and forecast future expansion patterns,” Singh said.
GMDA officials said geospatial technology has become a key planning instrument for the authority, enabling scientific evaluation of infrastructure requirements and helping prioritise future investments.
The study further highlights the need for integrated land-use planning, sustainable infrastructure development, improved transport connectivity, efficient water resource management and protection of ecological spaces as Gurugram continues to expand.
With urban growth expected to accelerate along major development corridors over the next five years, the findings are likely to serve as an important roadmap for GMDA’s future infrastructure and development strategy, ensuring that civic amenities keep pace with the city’s rapid transformation.
