Gurugram: In a major boost to the city’s public transport system, the Board of Directors of Gurugram Metropolitan City Bus Limited (GMCBL) has approved the induction of 25 new BS-VI compliant CNG buses and reviewed the phased rollout of a 100-bus electric fleet aimed at improving commuter services and promoting sustainable mobility.
The decision was taken during the 40th meeting of the GMCBL Board, where officials assessed the progress of Gurugram’s public transport network and discussed measures to strengthen fleet operations and passenger convenience.
As part of the approved plan, GMCBL will induct 25 standard-floor, 12-metre-long CNG buses with a seating capacity of 36 passengers each. The new buses will replace 25 ageing vehicles that have completed a significant portion of their operational life and are no longer delivering optimum efficiency. Officials said the replacement will enhance service reliability, improve passenger comfort and ensure smoother operations across city routes.
The Board also reviewed the progress of the electric bus programme. GMCBL informed members that the first electric bus has already been delivered and will soon undergo operational trials. The fully air-conditioned bus has a seating capacity of 25 passengers and marks the beginning of Gurugram’s transition towards cleaner public transport.
According to officials, another 24 electric buses are expected to join the fleet shortly. In total, 100 electric buses will be inducted in phases over the coming months, significantly expanding the city’s public transport capacity while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
During the meeting, GMCBL Chief Executive Officer Vishwajit Chaudhary informed the Board that commuters can now pay fares through any UPI-enabled application across all city bus services. The move is aimed at encouraging cashless travel and improving passenger convenience.
He added that digital transactions are steadily gaining popularity among commuters and now account for nearly 30 per cent of all fare payments made on GMCBL buses.
The Board reaffirmed its commitment to modernising Gurugram’s public transport network through fleet expansion, clean mobility initiatives and technology-driven services, with a focus on providing safe, reliable and commuter-friendly transportation for residents.
