Traffic relief coming soon: NHAI, GMDA speed up decongestion projects in Gurugram

Gurugram: In a bid to address chronic traffic congestion and improve road connectivity, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) have agreed to accelerate key infrastructure projects across the city. A high-level review meeting was held at the NHAI office between NHAI Chairman Santosh Kumar and GMDA CEO P.C. Meena to finalise a coordinated action plan.

The meeting focused on road infrastructure, congestion mitigation, connectivity enhancement and public safety, with an emphasis on close inter-agency coordination for timely execution. One of the major agenda items was the decongestion of Rajeev Chowk, one of Gurugram’s busiest traffic junctions. To ease traffic flow, two elevated grade separators are being planned.

For commuters travelling from Delhi to Sohna, a left-turn elevated ramp is proposed from NH-48 to NH-248A, along with an exit to the service road. Similarly, a right-turn elevated ramp is proposed for traffic moving from Sohna towards Delhi, connecting NH-248A to NH-48, with access from the service road as well. The projects aim to improve connectivity between the Sohna Expressway and the Mumbai Expressway. Both agencies agreed to expedite approvals and resolve issues related to land acquisition through stakeholder consultations.

NHAI also proposed a three-kilometre elevated corridor along the Narsinghpur stretch to reduce congestion. The Chairman directed officials to initiate preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR). GMDA informed that a storm water drain is being laid up to Badshahpur to tackle persistent waterlogging on the Narsinghpur service lane, while NHAI will construct a culvert on NH-48 to strengthen drainage connectivity.

To enhance pedestrian safety, the development of Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) on NH-48 was discussed. GMDA will identify required locations, while NHAI will construct the FOBs, which will later be maintained by GMDA. These will be equipped with ramps and lifts for improved accessibility.

The issue of waterlogging at underpasses during the monsoon was also reviewed. Both agencies decided on joint inspections and coordinated action to ensure effective stormwater discharge. Officials stressed that strong inter-agency coordination is crucial for improving mobility, safety and commuter convenience in Gurugram.
