Strict action ordered against encroachment in Gurugram

Gurugram: In a bid to make the city encroachment-free, clean and well-organised, a crucial coordination meeting was held under the chairmanship of Mayor Raj Rani Malhotra. The meeting was attended by Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, district town planner (enforcement), of the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) R.S. Bhath, senior municipal officials and councillors from various wards.

The meeting focused extensively on the growing problem of encroachment across the city and chalked out a concrete strategy to address the issue effectively. Mayor Raj Rani Malhotra issued clear and firm directions to ensure regular and strict action to remove encroachments from roads, streets, markets, intersections and public spaces. She said encroachments not only obstruct traffic and public convenience but also adversely affect the city’s cleanliness and aesthetics.

The Mayor directed officials to submit a weekly report on encroachment removal actions to her office. She made it clear that any negligence or laxity in implementation would not be tolerated and strict action would be taken against erring officers or employees.

Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya stated that if any complaint is received regarding negligence by officials or staff in encroachment-related matters, action will be taken strictly as per rules. Emphasising strict compliance with building bylaws, he said this is essential for improving the city’s infrastructure and civic amenities. He also stressed the need for better coordination among all concerned departments to deal with encroachment effectively.

Bhath informed the meeting about the encroachment removal actions carried out so far. He said drives have been conducted in several key areas, including Sadar Bazaar, Sheetla Mata Road and Vatika Chowk. He added that special focus will be laid on freeing government land from encroachments in the coming days.

Councillors also raised various issues and suggestions, including proper management of vending zones, action against illegal meat shops, removal of jhuggis, inclusion of councillors in the Town Vending Committee, and fixing police accountability to prevent re-encroachment after clearance drives. Discussions were also held on identifying designated city markets, potential vending zones, removal of illegal ramps, and making main roads, markets, intersections and green belts completely encroachment-free.

The meeting concluded with a consensus to carry out sustained and coordinated anti-encroachment drives to develop Gurugram into a well-planned, safe and citizen-friendly city.
