Gurugram: The Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG) has achieved a significant boost in property tax revenue through sustained, planned and stringent enforcement measures against defaulters.
As a result of an intensive drive led by the corporation’s tax branch, MCG has collected a record Rs 295 crore in property tax so far in the current financial year.
Officials said the achievement reflects the effective implementation of strategies and directions issued by Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya, aimed at strengthening the city’s revenue base.
Under the ongoing campaign against property tax defaulters, MCG has issued 410 notices to defaulting property owners. Additionally, 55 properties have been sealed for non-payment of dues despite repeated notices.
These actions alone have helped the civic body recover nearly ₹30 crore in outstanding property tax.
To further enhance tax collection, a recent review meeting was held with zonal taxation officers, where five key focus areas were identified. These include converting leads generated through call data into actual payments, taking action on violations reported by the Town and Country Planning (TCP) department in DLF areas, analysing PG-related data obtained from platforms such as Housing.com and Magicbricks, scrutinising listings on online PG platforms like Salt Stay and Houz, and acting on data related to illegal PG advertisements shared by MCG’s advertisement branch.
Based on inputs from these sources, the Municipal Corporation has decided to crack down strictly on tax evasion linked to properties being used as paying guest (PG) accommodations.
MCG has clarified that in such cases, the onus of providing proof regarding the period of PG usage will lie with the property owner. By default, the property will be assumed to have been used as a PG from the beginning of the assessment period (such as 2010–11) or from the year the area was brought under MCG limits. However, owners may submit valid documents through correction applications or appeals, as per rules.
Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya stated that complete, fair and timely collection of property tax remains a top priority, as robust revenue is essential for strengthening civic services, infrastructure and overall urban development in Gurugram.
