Gurugram :In strict compliance with the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) enforced by the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has intensified its action against activities contributing to air pollution across the city. Along with preventive measures to curb dust and emissions, the civic body is also taking stringent action against violators.
Over the past one week, MCG has imposed fines amounting to Rs 14.10 lakh in 274 cases related to air pollution violations. According to official data released by the corporation, penalties of Rs 75,000 were imposed on 170 individuals for not using dustbins. In 28 cases of garbage burning, fines totalling Rs 1.40 lakh were levied.
Additionally, 10 cases related to construction and demolition activities attracted penalties of Rs 2.60 lakh, while three cases of dust-generating activities were fined Rs 75,000.
The civic body also penalised nine cases of littering with fines of Rs 45,000. A major chunk of the penalty amount came from 51 cases where construction activities were found continuing despite restrictions, leading to fines of Rs 7.90 lakh. Moreover, three cases of uncovered construction material resulted in challans worth Rs 15,000. MCG enforcement teams are conducting regular inspections across various sectors to ensure strict adherence to GRAP norms.
To control dust pollution, the Municipal Corporation has stepped up mechanised road cleaning operations. As many as 18 mechanised sweeping machines are deployed during night hours on major roads to minimise traffic disruption and reduce dust levels.
In addition, regular water sprinkling is being carried out on roads and green belts. Ten truck-mounted sprinklers equipped with anti-smog guns are being used daily to spray treated water in different parts of the city. Water tankers have also been pressed into service to further suppress airborne dust particles.
Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya said that controlling air pollution is among MCG’s top priorities. He asserted that all GRAP guidelines are being implemented strictly and warned that violators will continue to face strict action. He also appealed to citizens to avoid burning waste, keep construction material covered and cooperate with civic authorities in building a cleaner and healthier Gurugram.
