A fight she refused to lose: Manipal Hospital Gurugram saves 28-year-old burn survivor

Gurugram: Doctors at Manipal Hospital, Gurugram, successfully treated a 28-year-old woman who sustained major burn injuries along with inhalation trauma following an LPG cylinder leak at her residence in Panipat. The patient, a nursing college teacher, was rushed to a local hospital where she received initial first aid before being referred to Manipal Hospital Gurugram for advanced and specialised care due to the severity of her condition.

According to hospital officials, the woman suffered extensive burns and damage to her respiratory tract after inhaling toxic fumes, making her condition life-threatening. Upon arrival at Manipal Hospital, she was immediately admitted to the intensive care unit, where a multidisciplinary medical team initiated advanced burn management protocols. The treatment included early stabilisation, airway protection, infection control, wound management, and continuous monitoring.

Burn injuries continue to be a significant public health challenge worldwide. As per the World Health Organization (WHO), India records an estimated 2.1 million burn injuries every year, leading to nearly 25,000 deaths.

Experts emphasize that severe burn cases require structured treatment, long-term rehabilitation, and psychological support to ensure recovery and quality of life.

Highlighting the complexity of the case, Dr. Asheesh Dhingra, Consultant – Plastic and Cosmetic Surgery at Manipal Hospital, Gurugram, said that severe burns are among the most critical medical emergencies. He noted that timely intervention and a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach are crucial for survival.

“In this case, early stabilisation, infection control, and constant monitoring played a key role. Equally important was the patient’s resilience and determination, which significantly contributed to her recovery,” he said.

After nearly a month-long intensive treatment and rehabilitation programme, the patient showed remarkable improvement and was discharged in a stable condition. Hospital authorities stated that the case underscores the importance of immediate medical attention in burn injuries and the role of specialised burn care centres in improving survival outcomes.
